Richard Du
2017 Orientation Chair

Hello! My name is Richard Du and I am a 3rd year UNB science student majoring in mathematics. I am also extremely excited to be this year’s Orientation Chair! We are already underway planning Orientation Week 2017 for you to ensure that your first week at UNB will be amazing! Starting this new chapter of your life can be both exciting and intimidating, so I am here to help kickstart your next years with a bang!

A little bit about myself: I love being outside, cycling, badminton, cooking, Kendrick Lamar and have definitely made my most memorable moments right here at UNB. You’ll probably run into me a few times so please do not hesitate to say hello! Also, feel free to message or email me if you have any questions or if you just want to chat about UNB.

I hope you are as excited as I am for the upcoming year! See you in September! Welcome to the UNB family.

Ben Porter
2017 Shinerama Chair

Hey! My name is Ben Porter and I am a 3rd year Science of Kinesiology Student. I am super pumped to be this year’s UNBSU Shinerama Chair. What is Shinerama you may ask? Well, Shinerama is a fundraiser that helps raise money to help support people living with Cystic Fibrosis. The money raised goes to helping out with research and also helping out with the cost of treatment and medications as this can be very expensive.

As Richard already said we have started the planning process for the 2017 Orientation week. I am really excited about this year's Shine campaign and we are hoping to top last year's total amount raised.

A couple interests of mine include: Hockey, Badminton, going on hikes and just relaxing and hanging out with friends. One of my favourite things about UNB is the amazing community feeling that is on campus. My favorite place to be on campus is in the Student Union Building (SUB) because I can always find someone to talk to. I am always around and down to chat! So if you see me don’t hesitate to say hello or ask me any questions! I am super pumped for this fall. See you all in September!

Carson Matchett

Hey everyone! My name is Carson Matchett and I can’t wait to help make the 2017 Orientation Week at UNB one of the most memorable weeks of your lives. I am a third-year Kin Science student from Miramichi New Brunswick and I love meeting new people, playing sports, and being active. I grew up in a small town where I never really had the opportunity to meet new people so the thought of coming to university and having to start over was very scary to me. When I arrived at UNB for my orientation week all that stress was immediately gone and I felt very welcome and included by everyone around me.

As an Orientation Leader, I hope to provide all new students with an experience that will positively shape their time at UNB. If anyone has questions about transitioning from a small school to university, or has any questions about UNB feel free to contact me. I can’t wait to meet everyone in September!

Welcome to the UNB family!

Jill Lamb

Hello pals, I would like to welcome you all to Freddy Beach and the UNB community! My name is Jill Lamb and I am ecstatic to be a part of an amazing group of individuals who are going to help make your first week at UNB unforgettable! I am from a small rural town in the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia where there is more cows than people. Picking up my life and moving to Fredericton was quite a shock at first! However, thanks to the kind people and friendly faces of Fredericton I was able to transition easily and start creating lasting memories. I am currently in my 3rd year of Biology here at UNB and have lived on campus my last three years in the Residence Community!

When I’m not hidden away on the third floor the HIL or in my residence, you can find me running in Odell Park, rock climbing at the Lady Beaverbrook Gym, eating Spin Dip at the Cellar, or sipping a cup of coffee in one of the many downtown Fredericton cafes! Orientation Week is by far my favorite part of the entire year and I cannot wait to experience it with all of you. The atmosphere of the week is exhilarating and allows you to get pumped up for the year ahead! If there is one thing I would have wished to pass on to first year me would be to enjoy yourself and focus on more than just the books!

Balance is important in university, and you will learn just as much from interacting with others during your university career as you will when reading that 450 page textbook. There are so many opportunities for you to try a new sport, join a club, or volunteer with a new group of individuals. Don’t be afraid to go outside your comfort zone during your university years and try something brand new! I am quite the chatterbug, so if you see me around campus please do not hesitate to strike up a conversation or ask me a question.

Enjoy your summer friends and see you all in the fall!

Alexa Innes

Hey everyone! My name is Alexa Innes and I’m in my third year of Medicinal Chemistry here at UNB. I can't wait to help welcome you all into what is hopefully the best four years of your life! I’ve lived in Fredericton for my entire life, and so I thought it would be hard to get involved as I wasn’t living in residence. If that is your case, dont worry! Orientation week is the perfect opportunity to get involved and make new friends. There are so many great clubs and societies on campus and there will always be a place for you to fit in.

About me: Anyone who knows me knows that I basically live in the science library. So if you ever need to find me you know where to look! And if you ever have any questions, please don't hesitate to shoot me a message! When I’m not hiding away in my cubicle, you can usually find me doing some other things I love: running, hiking, going to the gym, laying on the beach, and playing my guitar. I’m also really into sports and I’m always down for a good game of beach volleyball. I love travelling and getting out of my comfort zone, and I’m always up for an adventure.

I know it can be intimidating coming to a new school, but trust me, you are going to have a blast! I can't wait to meet all of you and welcome you into our UNB family!

Taylor Morgan

Hello everyone! My name is Taylor Morgan and I am a 3rd year Chemical Engineering student! I’m so excited to have the opportunity to meet all of you and I can’t wait to kick off Orientation Week 2017!! I have been living off campus since I started at UNB. Since I was neither from Fredericton nor was I living in residence, I thought I would be missing out on this ‘university experience’ everyone had been talking about; let me tell you, I’ve never been more wrong. There are so many opportunities to be involved, whether you live on or off campus. If you’re ever unsure about how you can be more involved don’t hesitate to ask, I’m always down to chat! If you ever need to find me, I live in Head Hall (the Engineering building), and I’m open to giving advice and doing anything I can to help better your university experience. University will be what you make of it; don’t be afraid to get involved and take a step outside of your comfort zone. Challenge yourself to do something new, because you never know, you might just like it!

As I’ve mentioned, I love to be involved and try different/new things. Some of my favourite things include: the UNB Women’s rugby team, playing intramural basketball and volleyball, running, hiking, and skiing. I also have a huge passion for missioning in Guatemala. I’m super pumped to be planning your 2017 Orientation week and I’m looking forward to meeting all of you in the fall!! Welcome to UNB!!

Ali Balcom

Hey everyone!  I can’t wait to be part of the beginning of one of the most exciting journeys of your life.

I am in a small program called Renaissance College studying leadership and business.

I love meeting new people, travelling, recreationally playing sports, spending time on the beach swimming, kayaking, canoeing, or relaxing, and pretending to know the words to songs.  I will try almost anything once.

Being from Fredericton, I know it can be more difficult to become involved in the UNB community, but Orientation Week is the perfect opportunity.  And trust me, it is worth every minute!

Welcome to the UNB family! I can’t wait to see you all in September.

Drew Robart

Hi friends! My name is Drew Robart; I am a 3rd year Biomedical Mechanical Engineering student, and I am extremely excited to be a part of the 2017 Orientation Week! This will be my 2nd year living in Fredericton and I can’t imagine spending my university days anywhere else.

As a transfer student, I know starting university can be nerve wracking, and getting involved can be difficult, but Orientation Week is a great time to start! Part of what makes UNB amazing is the sense of community and family here, and that there’s something for everyone, through campus clubs, teams, faculties, residence and much more.

A few of my hobbies include: sailing, hiking, playing piano, going kayaking, and running on the cross country team. If I had one superpower it would be tying shoes moderately fast, and my favorite food is Massaman Curry. If you have any questions or just want to hang out, you can find me on campus in Engineering Head Hall or at the SUB studying. I’m already counting down the days to welcome you all to UNB, and hope you’re ready to have the time of your lives!

Welcome to the UNB family!

Grayson Beairsto
UNB Student Union VP Finance

Welcome to UNB! Four years living the Freddy Beach lifestyle and I am still loving every minute of it. More than excited to make Orientation week 2017 one of the best weeks of our lives, and give a huge UNB welcome to all you new UNB students this coming fall! I am a fourth-year Business student, straight out of Ottawa, Ontario. Big time Oilers fan, even before McDavid arrived. Love skiing, sailing and The Head and the Heart.

I think one of the best things about UNB is how amazingly easy it is to get involved and meet great people! Whether you get involved through Residence, a club, your faculty, Intramurals, or the Student Union there is always lots going on when you need a break from studying.

I can’t wait for this fall to welcome you all to UNB! Have a stellar summer, and see you on campus!!!

Brian Tozer
UNB Student Union VP Student Services

HEEEEY new students! I'm Brian, from Moncton, going into 5th year science. I have spent the last 3 years in residence (Mackenzie & McLeod), and I am excited to be joining the TownHouse life this year. My favourite things in life are puppies and PT Cruisers. I am very excited to be spending my 5th O-Week as a BlackShirt. Come say HEY if you see me around!

Jess Vandenborre

Hi everyone! My name is Jess Vandenborre and I am a 2nd year student in the Renaissance College faculty here at UNB, studying both leadership and sciences. I am so excited to be a part of the 2017 Orientation Week as there is no better way to start off the school year. The Orientation team this year is motivated and ready to give you all the best “Welcome to UNB”, because we are truly so happy to have you all joining this amazing university.

About myself: I love meeting and talking to new people, most of my hobbies revolve around music, and I am probably the clumsiest person you'll ever meet.

I know coming into a new school can be scary, especially if you’re coming from a small high school like I did, but it’s also really fun. You’ll get to meet a ton of new people, try all kinds of new things, and make some pretty incredible memories. If you’ve got any questions about life at UNB, or simply want to make your first new friend at university - give me a shout!

Can’t wait to see you all in the fall!

Anna Petrie

Hey everyone! My name is Anna Petrie, and I am from beautiful Fredericton, New Brunswick, the place that you will call “home” this fall.  I am a third-year student in Kin Science and am an Event Coordinator for UNB’s Orientation Week.

Whether you will be a first-year student, a transfer student, or on an international exchange, there will be so many events for you to be involved with this year at UNB and you won’t want to miss a single one!  I created memories during my Orientation Week that I will never forget -- from the constant energy felt during the first night at our Blast-Off event, to the new friends you’ll inevitably make during the Cornboil, to the unforgettable last night at the finale concert - you’ll begin your UNB experience with peers that will be there to support you throughout your entire university degree.

A few things about myself: I love going to the gym, running, yoga, being outside, watching movies with my friends, playing with my dogs and cat, traveling, and I love what I learn!

I’m so excited to see all your new faces and to get to know you better.  Have a fun summer and get ready for a UNBelievable experience!
