Woodsmen Team
The UNB Woodsmen Team is a fully student run organization consisting solely of men and women from the faculty of forestry and environmental management.
The team has been going strong since the early 1960's. Every year we compete in lumberjack competitions here at UNB, Sir Sanford Fleming College in Lindsey, Ontario, McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, and Nova Scotia Agricultural College in Truro, Nova Scotia.
There are also several competitions that the team attends around the North Eastern United States. Since we are an entirely student run organization it gives us independence and pride not known by varsity teams. We conduct annual raffles and get donations from companies to fund our trips to competitions as well as to purchase and maintain equipment.
The events that we participate in simulate the traditional forest industry as it was known in the early part of the last century and include chopping and sawing wood, log decking, pulp tossing, axe throwing and several other traditional events. Being a member of the woodsmen team is a unique experience that gives a great opportunity to meet people within the faculty as well as people from other schools. We have been hosting our own competition here in Fredericton for the past 45 years and have seen teams from northern and nouthern Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, New York, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Maine.
UNB is also a member of CILA (Canadian Intercollegiate Lumberjacking Association). Their website (www.lumberjacking.ca) contains detailed information about the events we participate in as well as competition results.
